Duval county and The City of Jacksonville merged in 1968, creating a single entity governing all of Duval County with the exception of the beach communities (Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach) and Baldwin. Jacksonville covers almost 900 square miles and ranks as the 14th largest city in the United States in population with more than 800,000 residents.

Beyond the majestic skyline of Downtown Jacksonville you'll find quaint riverfront streets, lined with boutiques, Bed & Breakfasts and sidewalk cafes. You'll find bustling business districts with shopping malls and upscale dining. And of course, Jacksonville boasts a plentiful amount of breathtaking, totally undeveloped natural landscape. There are miles of white sandy beaches to explore, and you'll also find a true paradise for hiking, camping and water sports. Best of all, no matter where you venture, you'll find Jacksonville's unique brand of Southern hospitality and charm.

The military and the healthcare sector are major drivers of Jacksonville's economy. The military is the city's largest employer, particularly the naval air station. Tens of thousands of military have stayed in the area after retiring.

Events

From the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl Classic festivities on New Years Eve and New Years Day to the Jacksonville Jazz Festival in April to the Mayor's Holiday Open House at city hall in December, the city's Special Events Office produces a variety of musical, cultural and festive events throughout the year.  Here are a few:

Arts & Culture

Along the stunning St. Johns riverfront, a burgeoning arts district rises from a diverse urban landscape, illuminating the heart of the city with sophisticated style. Consistently recognized as one of the Top 25 Arts Destinations in the country by American Style Magazine, the Jacksonville cultural scene is rapidly growing for both residents to enjoy. From its historic multicultural and film industry roots to world-class festivals, symphonic events and Broadway productions to hip art galleries and renowned museums hosting contemporary, Renaissance and up-and-coming masterpieces, experience cultural enlightenment in Northeast Florida.

Parks & Recreation

Only minutes away from the urban sophistication of Jacksonville’s vibrant city center, a natural wonderland awaits observation and discovery. A testament to the untouched beauty of the region and a reflection of the unique authenticity of the Northeast Florida experience, the abundant expanse of park land and ecological preserves in Jacksonville provide an unforgettable opportunity to escape the confines of city life and relax in nature’s playground. With over 111,600 designated acres, including the 46,000-acre Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, Jacksonville proudly boasts the largest urban park system in the country.

There are seven state parks and preserves in Jacksonville. With more than five miles of beautiful, white sandy beaches, Little Talbot Island is one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier islands in Northeast Florida. Maritime forests, desert-like dunes, and undisturbed salt marshes on the western side of the island allow for hours of nature study and relaxation. The diverse habitats in the park host a wealth of wildlife for viewing including river otters, marsh rabbits, bobcats, and a variety of native and migratory birds.

Surrounding surf and tidal streams present excellent fishing for bluefish, striped bass, redfish, flounder, mullet, and sheepshead. Other popular park activities include hiking, kayaking, beachcombing, surfing and picnicking.

Fort George Island Cultural State Park offers boating, fishing, off-road bicycling, and hiking.  Small boats, canoes, and kayaks can be launched on the tidal waters.

Beaches

From the mighty St. Johns River carving a path through the heart of Jacksonville to the endless stretch of Atlantic coastline including Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach, the waterways of Northeast Florida truly capture the essence of the Florida lifestyle. From the beaches to Downtown – water adventures are an essential piece of the puzzle that makes up Jacksonville.

As much for its beautiful beaches as anything, Jacksonville has become known as Florida's First Coast. Unlike much of the rest of Florida, the First Coast's miles of beaches remain relatively unspoiled and unfenced. The Beaches communities in Duval County -- Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach and Neptune Beach -- also offer some of the best sport fishing, boating and water sport opportunities in the country.

A stroll along the beach might yield a collection of seashells, a view of the porpoise and northern right whales that cavort off the coast or merely the relaxed state of mind that ocean waves can foster.

Sports

The Northeast Florida region is rich with a great sports tradition. As home of the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars, the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl and the annual Florida-Georgia football game, the area took the international spotlight in 2005 as host of Super Bowl XXXIX. Besides football, Jacksonville also hosts national golf, tennis and baseball events throughout the year. Unique sporting adventures await thrill seekers with surfing, kayaking and skateboarding opportunities throughout the area. Combine our sporting assets with our warm climate and Jacksonville and the beaches is a sportsman’s paradise.
