Pasco County is one of three Counties that make up “Greater Tampa Bay”.  It is home to Dade City, the County Seat, which dates back to the 19th Century and New Port Richey, which is young by comparison.   A County of shady rivers and scenic coastline, Pasco County has more than enough natural beauty to share. Take a drive through the kumquat groves and rolling hills that give Pasco its personality. With plenty of parks and picnic areas, you can enjoy an afternoon lunch in the breezy Florida weather or a hike along one of the many trails. Further north, visit St. Leo Abby founded in 1889 by Benedictine Monks and the nearby Grotto, an outdoor chapel peacefully residing among towering trees in a serene atmosphere.

Experience Florida’s citrus history at the Citrus History Museum and visit the recently reopened Historic Train Depot. Tour the Pasco County Historic Courthouse, built in 1909 and restored to its original glory

In New Port Richey, the West Pasco Historical Society Museum & Library started as an old school house built in 1885. Now it holds many permanent displays of early businesses and a collection of novels, biographies, photographs and maps. Other popular historic sites are New Port Richey's downtown murals, the Zephyrhills Depot Museum and the World War II Barracks Museum.

Parks & Recreation

Pasco County boasts more than 30 visitor-friendly parks and preserves scattered throughout the county.

At Sims Park, bask in the sunshine on one of the many benches edging the river and bird watch. Perhaps you may even see a gentle manatee. A visit to Withlacoochee River Park brings foot trails, a fishing dock, picnic shelters and playgrounds and a canoe launch. The Withlacoochee, which means “little great water,” flows north past Dade City and Withlacoochee State Forest until it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. If you explore in a canoe, you will observe the “natives” of this river habitat. River otters, alligators, largemouth bass, bream, bluegill, bowfin and several other species of fish, all call the Withlacoochee home.

Pasco County’s only state park, Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park, is brand new and early in its development, but is open for public enjoyment.

James E. Grey Preserve is 50 acre of wetlands and 30 aces of uplands with an exceptional array of wildlife on a prehistoric hunting camp by American Indians. A canoe launch beckons you.

Pasco is home to many fresh and saltwater species of fish including: largemouth bass, catfish, Spanish mackerel, snook, tarpon, cobia, trout, redfish, grouper. With 20 miles of shoreline and numerous lakes and rivers, fishing in Pasco County is a popular pastime.  Spend the morning fishing or charter a trip where everything has been taken care of, including tackle, bait and licensing.

Devil’s Rock Yard is a favorite fishing spot for locals. So is Aripeka, a historic fishing village on the Gulf of Mexico, which attracts anglers from near and far.

A self-guided canoe tour along the Withlacoochee River offers a unique vantage point from which you can observe the animals, plants, and ecosystems that Pasco has preserved. If you prefer kayaking, glide through the canals of the Pithlachascotee (Cotee) River.

Pasco’s coast offers some of the best diving in Florida. From 10 to 35 miles offshore, at depths of 20 to 90 feet, divers can observe numerous fish species in all colors, shapes and sizes and explore diverse sunken treasures. There are several ledges with colorful sponge gardens to discover, as well as a sunken freighter and crane. Experienced divers can challenge their senses at Hudson Grotto, a Gulf Coast sinkhole with 110-foot walls. This deep-water experience is a challenge for any skilled diver – daylight disappears 50 feet down.

New Port Richey

Pasco County is ranked as one the fasting growing counties in Florida, according to The St. Petersburg Times.   Pasco’s City of New Port Richey attracts new residents and visitors at an increasing rate each year based on several factors.  New Port Richey’s geography blends nature, beaches and great shopping with restaurants, culture and business - all with a small-town feel.  Major attractions are nearby.  New Port Richey is rich in history and a town alive with happenings.

In New Port Richey, the crystal blue waters of the meandering Cotee River weave through the center of town. Incorporated in 1924, it was expected that the lovely city would become the future home site for famous stars of silent films, making the town another Hollywood. The advent of "talkies" and the depression changed the economic direction of the city. Nonetheless, several of the buildings and homes that still remain in New Port Richey were built in the early 1900s giving the town a touch of old-fashioned charm. It is also the only city along the West Pasco coast with a downtown business district offering streetscapes and charming retail shops.

Housing is affordable in New Port Richey.  A one bedroom condo with gulf views is listed for under $60,000. Of course, you can spend more than $1 million for a gulf front estate, but there are single family homes in every price range in a variety of neighborhoods.
